Narcissus
Our collection of narcissus (popularly known as daffodils), features predominantly the smaller varieties and some species. These have the advantage of being useful in containers as well as borders and are especially appropriate in smaller gardens. In the open garden they are far more weather resistant than tall, top-heavy types, and they also die down more discreetly, their less obvious foliage being quickly obscured by the surrounding growth of neighbouring plants. Many are eminently suitable for naturalising. Last year, we added a couple of historic varieties, which can be difficult to come by but which we love for their elegant informality. These proved popular with customers and are offered again this season.
AGM denotes the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Narcissus albus plenus odoratus
'Heirloom' variety with lovely, fragrant, double flowers which resemble miniature white roses. This is the double flowered form of the pheasant's eye narcisus and can be hard to come by. Flowering in late spring at 12-14" (30-36cm).

Narcissus 'Altruist'
Small cupped daffodil sporting flowers of a most distinctive apricot hue. It was a sensation on our display at the RHS Spring Show, Westminster, when we re-introduced it a few years ago. Only recently available in commercial quantities. The flowers retain their colouring best in dappled shade. Flowering in April. Ht. 16" (40cm).Bulb size 12/14 cm

Narcissus 'Bella Estrella'
The name translates as 'Beautiful Star' and it is as unusual as it is lovely - a jonquil daffodil with a split cup. The petals are white, the cup palest yellow and the flowers, produced in April, have a lovely fragrance. Ht.16"+ (40cm+) Bulb size 12/14 cm

Narcissus fernandesii var. cordubensis
New in 2021
Charming little species from SW Spain, which punches well above it's weight in terms of fragrance and flower power. Each stem yields several gleaming gold blooms with an exceptionally strong, sweet scent. Needs a warm, sheltered position with well-drained soil, where it can enjoy a dry summer rest. Ideal also for growing in pots in the greenhouse. Flowering March/April at 10" (25cm).

Narcissus romieuxii 'Julia Jane'
A lovely, pale yellow form of bulbocodium, a native of North Africa. Flowering in February -March, or earlier in a mild winter, at 6-8" (15-20cm).

Narcissus 'Kedron'
A jonquilla hybrid, with flowers of delightful apricot colouring. The leaves are very fine - almost grass-like - meaning that they die back very discretely after flowering is finished. As a further bonus, the blooms have a lovely fragrance.
This variety has been immensely popular when we have displayed it at shows and it also gained a 'Best Buy' recommendation from 'Gardening Which'...
Narcissus 'Lieke'
This pretty little jonquil is grown by a friend in Holland and is named after his daughter. Late flowering, it has white petals and a small lemon-green cup, with the good scent typical of its group.
The variety has won plaudits from 'Which Gardening' for its long flowering period (45 days recorded) and prolific flowering, producing 3 stems per bulb, each bearing 3 flowers. Height 14" (36cm).

The Lent Lily daffodil, a species native to southern Europe, which is excellent for naturalising, even in some shade. Flowers have cream petals with a yellow trumpet. Blooms March-April at 8" (20cm).

Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus AGM (Pheasant’s Eye)
The Pheasant’s Eye narcissus. Slightly reflexed white petals surround a bright red edged yellow eye. Hardy, late flowering species, strongly scented & good for naturalising. Hybrids of poeticus are available but, to our minds, none has the elegance of this, the true species. Ht. 14-16" (35-40cm).

This American-bred winner of the Best Daffodil Award at the 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show, packs an amazing punch. Each bulb produces 3-5 stems, each bearing 2-4 flowers - which works out at between 12-20 flowers per bulb!

Narcissus 'White Lady'
New in 2019
Historical daffodil, raised pre-1898 and widely grown for the cut-flower trade during that century. Now somewhat rarer but 'White Lady' retains the vigour and elegance which made her so popular then. The pristine white petals are slightly inwards facing, the cup pale lemon, and the whole delicately perfumed. Flowering in April at 18" (45cm).
