The 'Snake's Head' is our only native fritillary, seen growing in large colonies in (mostly) protected sites. Although a native of water meadows, it is a fairly adaptable species and, whilst preferring a moist soil when grown in the open, it will tolerate drier conditions if given a position in dappled shade. The pendent flowers are mauve, chequered purple, although some white flowers, chequered green, are included also. Ht.12" (30cm).
